Ombré Nails Made Easy

It's no secret that I love nail polish.  Over the past year or so, I've really gotten obsessed with nail art--in particular: ombré nails.

Since I have oodles of polishes, I really don't have a problem finding a few colors in the same group to use for a gradation look.  But if you don't own hundreds of polishes, or just want to make sure that the colors you wear go together, check out these fab Kiss Gradation Polishes.  They take all the guess work out of color-picking and make the ombré look easier to achieve.

Each set comes with three coordinating colors (personally, I'm a fan of the pink set, though all of them are super pretty!) and instructions on how to create the gorgey look in three easy steps!

My only concern is that the set does not come with a makeup sponge.  It's my preferred tool for maximum blending.  But after checking out a few swatches online, it looks like the colors are sheer enough to blend on their own.  Of  course you can use a sponge if you feel that it's necessary, though. And for under $7, it's def worth a try!

Lip Stain and Gloss in One!

I simply cannot walk into a store that has lip products without buying one. My latest find, L'Oreal's Colour Riche Caresse Wet Shine Stain, is absolutely phenomenal.

I know I've mentioned it before, but L'Oreal is actually owned by the same company that owns Lancome, so most of the products are of the same great quality.  I've always been a L'Oreal fan, but was a little skeptical about the whole lip stain / glossy look that the product promised.  In the past, I've just had horrible luck with products like that. They either don't last as long as they claim, flake off, or just look fake and plastic-y.

But after trying it out, I'm incredibly obsessed! This stain is super lightweight, looks gorgeous and somehow manages to hydrate lips (which I've yet to find in any other stain).

The product is marketed as a lip stain that thinks it's a gloss. I'd say that's pretty accurate.

I've tried almost all of the 12 shades offered and love them all. If I had to choose a fave hue, it would have to be Lilac Ever After.  It's more pink than purple--in fact, I'd just say that it's a cool, rose pink.  On me, the color looks like my natural lip color, only a step up. It gives a little bit of a pop of color without going overboard.  The darker shades are amazing too; it really depends on what look you're going for.

This is def a product to stock up on. At $10 a tube, you can afford to try out a few!

The Top Trends for Spring 2013

We're only weeks away from spring--I know, I know...very exciting! Time to put away the sweaters and bust out some fab new, warm-weather looks.

I've done a little research and have found the top three trends of the season.  They're all Sassy Fashionista Approved (so, no fashion faux pas here) and are very wearable.

Stripes, Plaid and Squares:
The season's hottest print is all about geometric shapes.  Squares, stripes, and anything linear is not only gracing the runway, it's also an easy and flattering trend for everyone. With a couple of carefully places lines and shapes, you can easily give yourself the image of having a perfect hourglass figure.  It's a good way to trick the eye, and it's fun to play around with different shapes!

Metallic, Iridescent and Sheen:
Metallics showed their face last year, but they're back and better than ever! I'm not talking sinply gold and silver--there are high-sheen hues out there that are unexpected and gorgeous.  Metallic blue is one of my favorite picks.  With this trend, it's best to stick to accessories.  Approach with some caution as shiny fabrics can look cheap, in a "disco ball" sort of way. Keep that in mind, and you should be all right!

Flower Power:
Per usual, flowers are in this season. What makes this year different? We're seeing a lot of prints that give a nod to the 60s.  Anything remotely hippie-chic can easily be worn with this trend. Pick an adorable floral top and pair with skinny jeans. Head-to-toe floral is a bit much.

Estee Lauder Gift With Purchase

It's that time again! I really do try to pace myself when it comes to these incredible GWPs, but the latest one at Dillards from Estee Lauder is an absolute must-have!

First of all, per usual, let's talk about the bag. It's designed by Lilly Pulitzer, who is a fabulous fashion designer and is well-known for her prints. The makeup bag alone is super cute. It's floral, pink, and the perfect size for all the makeup you need for the day!  It also could be used as a clutch, if you want to get super creative.

What comes inside the bag is also great.  For those of you who haven't really tried the brand, let me tell you--it's pretty damn fantastic.  Their makeup is highly pigmented, and their skincare products are simply to die for.  As you all know, I have severely sensitive skin, and nothing in the brand has irritated my skin at all.

So, back to the bag! What comes in it is perfect for everyone because you can actually choose what you want! There are four different complete options to pick from.

All you have to do is spend $35 or more on Estee Lauder products (not a difficult task--trust me!) and you will receive:

  • Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex, deluxe travel size
  • Sumptuous Extreme Lash Multiplying Volume Mascara in Extreme Black, 10-day supply
  • Estee Lauder Sensuous Nude Body Veil, deluxe travel size
  • Exclusive Cosmetic Bag featuring an original Lilly Pulitzer print

PLUS, you have a choice of the following skincare, lip, and eyeshadow products:

Deluxe Size Moisture Choices

  • Resilience Lift Firming/Sculpting Face and Neck Creme SPF 15
  • DayWear Advanced Multi-Protection Anti-Oxidant Creme SPF 15

Lip and Eye Shade Choices

  • Pure Color Crystal lipstick in Pink Parfait
  • Pure Color Crystal lipstick in Rose Petal
  • Pure Color eye shadow quad in Wild Truffle, Tranquil Moon, Tempting Mocha and Ivory Slipper
  • Pure Color eye shadow quad in Sugar Cube, Amazing Grey, Amethyst Spark and Lavish Mink

Not bad, right?! If you're having a hard time trying to deciding on what to buy, I highly recommend Estee Lauder's Five Color Eyeshadow Palette. It comes in a bunch of different colors and I absolutely love the quality.

Happy Anniversary to My Fabulous Parents!

31 years ago today, my lovely parents got married! They look almost identical as they do in their wedding picture (although my dad thankfully changed his choice of glasses!) and the love is still there!

If not for them, I wouldn't be the awesome gal that I am. And a special thanks to my mom for always helping me out with makeup when I was growing up! I know it was a challenge--I was not born with all this knowledge!

Happy Anniversary, to my fave parents!

Get the Right Purse for Your Purse-inality!

I'm a self-proclaimed purse addict. I simply cannot go into a store and not look at (and usually buy) a handbag. At one point, I had over 100 bags. I've cut back a bit, but honestly purses are my ultimate weakness.  My boyfriend is not impressed.

If you're not crazy like me, you probably don't give handbags the same scrutiny you give a pair of jeans, or a dress: if a handbag is cute or fits your lifestyle then it works.

But did you know that a handbag can flatter your shape almost as much as the right outfit?

A few easy steps when buying a purse can not only knock off pounds visually (for real!)-- it'll polish up your style in a flash.

If you are trying to play down a body type, choose a shape that is the opposite of your body silhouette. For example, if you are very tall and thin, you can add a slouchy, rounded hobo bag to add some curves to your figure (va va voom!). If you're short and voluptuous, play off opposites by choosing a handbag that is tall and rectangular or long and sleek (like a cute clutch).

Another thing I've noticed is that there are oodles of different handbag shapes and terminology.  It can be confusing and overwhelming.

Here are the basics:

  • Tote - An open-top bag with straps or handles.
  • Hobo bag - A crescent-shaped shoulder bag. This style is often soft and slouchy.
  • Duffle - Tall shoulder bag, often with a wider opening on top.
  • Field bag - A flap-top shoulder bag with utility-type closure.
  • Clutch - A small, handheld bag or a larger, geometric shape that is tucked under the arm or carried in your hand.
  • Satchel- A large, handheld bag. Most satchels are structured.
  • Baguette - Long and rounded shoulder bag resembling the namesake bread.
  • Messenger - A large, soft shoulder bag with long straps (usually worn across the body).
  • Cigar Box - A small, boxy, hard bag.
  • Pouch - A soft, small bag.
  • Crossbody bag - A bag -- often smaller in size -- that is worn across the body at an angle.

Will the right bag make you look thinner? Not exactly, but it can flatter your shape. While the shape should oppose your body type for maximum flattery, the size of the bag should also be in proportion to your figure.

Think scale here: a woman who is 6 feet tall and a size 14 would look lost with a teensy little hand-held bag. A petite size 0 would look overwhelmed by an enormous slouchy bag (even though I'm quite guilty of this offense).

A shoulder bag's length (where the bottom of the bag hits your body) will accentuate whatever part of the body it comes near.  For example, a shoulder bag that ends around the hips will play up your hip width because the eye is immediately drawn to the bag.  Keep this in mind.

So, when shopping for a new bag, take the time in the store to try on handbags in front of a mirror just like you would for clothing. It'll pay off--promise!

TWO FAB FRAGRANCE GIVEAWAYS!!!

There's nothing better than smelling amazing. You can have on the best outfit in the world, but if you smell like crap, it's not going to do anything for you!

I've dedicated a lot of time to trying out new fragrances, throwing out gross ones, and worshiping the lovely ones.  I have a couple winners here. And I even have a bottle of each to GIVEAWAY to two lucky readers!!

First up is VINCE CAMUTO Eau de Parfum.  As most of you guys know, I'm obsessed with pretty perfume bottles. This one is absolutely gorgeous. And what's inside it is even better.

The scent is sexy and classy at the same time. It's a great fragrance for day or night, in my opinion. What's in it? The top notes are enriched with notes of rum absolute and osmanthus nectar. It also contains Bulgarian rose and night blossoming jasmine, enhanced with leather notes, while a base incorporates vanilla, absolute, sensual patchouli, hot Brazilian amber and leathery musk.

The end result is pure magic.

I have one 1.7 oz bottle to giveaway (see below for details).

Vintage Bloom is a fabulous fragrance made by the always lovely Jessica Simpson. Like the name implies, there are def some floral notes in the scent. That said, it's not overpowering.  I'm usually not a fan of floral fragrances, but this one is perfect.

What makes it smell so amazing? The scent contains citrus notes from Calabrese lemon, Caipirinha lime zest and floral notes of raspberry bloom and stardust peony.  The result is a very fresh scent that be worn for any occasion, all year long!

I also have one 1.7 oz bottle to giveaway (see below for details).

Both fragrances are fabulous and I'm sure everyone out there would love either one!

To enter the giveaways send an email to sassyalana@gmail.com with the subject line reading either "VINCE CAMUTO" or "VINTAGE BLOOM". The giveaways end 2/25 and the winners will be alerted via email.

Good luck, ladies!!!

Disclosure: This post contains sample products sent for consideration by a PR firm. My priority is to you, and I honor that commitment by being honest! If you have any questions about this, please email me.

The Alana Necklace

It's so rare that I find something that shares my name.  I mean, Alana just isn't very common.  Much as I love the name, I've always been jealous of the girls with more "normal" names simply because they could always find stuff with their name on it.

So, when I found this super classy Alana Luxe Triple Strand Necklace and Earring Gift Set from Avon, I was understandably excited. I actually had a seizure of delight because I love it so much.

And I'm not just writing about the set because it shares my name--I genuinely like the necklace. It's perfectly chunky for a night out, and the earrings are simple and classic.

The best part? Each set is currently on sale for under $10! Alana ROCKS!!

Mint Shoes!

Lately, I've been having a love affair with mint hues.  My nails have been sporting the super light green color for a while now, and I've recently decided that I need to expand my mint obsession to my accessories.

So, I found these super cute Julie Mary Jane shoes by the always lovely Christian Siriano.

I absolutely love these shoes! As most of you know, I have a crazily difficult time finding shoes, as my feet are really tiny (read: child-esque).  So when I'm looking for "big girl" shoes, I usually end up going with a pair that has a strap, so that I can adjust it to keep my foot from falling out.

The heel is perfect too.  It's a little over three inches, but the strap, and the lining, make it comfortable.

And yes, they come in another color, for the mint opposed.  The champagne hue is also quite pretty.

Each pair is around $55--I know, I know, kind of pricey.  But I promise that these shoes will last through multiple seasons and are totally worth it (at least that's what I'm telling myself)!

Stumped on What to Get Your Guy? Try a Matching Thermos and Tie!

Shopping for guys is crazily difficult. You want your main squeeze to really appreciate and love your gift, rather than pretend to love it and leave it sitting on a shelf, or shoved in the back of a closet.  I'm def guilty of giving gifts like that.

So, I went on a man-gift hint and found this adorable matching tie and thermos set from Jack Spade.  I really like the idea.  Sure the whole tie thing is a little played out, but the fact that you can get a matching thermos? Super cute.

I also especially love the tie.  The colors are fabulous and masculine, without being boring.

You can get the tie for $98 and the thermos for $35. A little pricey, but it's a great gift!

Know Someone With a Heart of Gold?

Gold Toe is a fabulous brand that has the most adorable socks.  Sometimes we forget how important socks are in fashion, but trust me--you'll be much happier in a comfy, stylish pair!

Currently, Gold Toe is doing a pretty cool giveaway that I wanted to share with you ladies.

How does it work? Well, you cannot nominate yourself, but you can nominate a friend who has a "heart of gold".  And maybe they'll nominate you back!  Once you nominate a friend, you need to write their Heart of Gold story in 250 or less.  You also have to let your friend know that you've nominated them because they need to accept it in order to win.  You can nominate up to five people.

You can also vote for nominees.  Bonus? If you nominate the winner, you receive $500!  So be sure to vote often!

They're also giving away a gift pack of Gold Toe socks every week (yay!)  You can pick from the following socks:

  • An array of sock solutions from their G® collection for the stylish woman
  • A sophisticated and colorful collection of argyle socks for the discerning professional
  • Their new G® collection of men’s performance athletic socks
  • Cheerful assortments for some springtime fun
  • Low rise, feel good socks in colorful multi packs

The actual Heart of Gold prize is amazing--the winner actually receives an ounce of gold (or its cash equivalent), which is valued around $1,700!

The giveaway ends on 2/14, so be sure to get your nominations in right away!

Beauty Boo-Boo: Ombre Hair

I am SO sick of seeing the whole "ombre hair trend" all over the place.

The idea is that you actually go to a hair salon and ask for a darker color closer to your roots, and a lighter color near the ends.

Am I crazy, or is that a complete waste of a hair appointment??!

The result is just looking like you haven't had your hair done in forever and your roots are coming in.  Not attractive.  Especially when it's as drastic as brown and blonde.

This basically screams to the world, "oh I haven’t been to a hairstylist in 4 months".  It’s messy, not esthetically pleasing, and looks lazy.

Another thing to keep in mind: Changing your hair color is a fun thing to do, but remember it’s also damaging to your hair. The most fragile part of our hair is the ends, so just bleaching the ends to achieve this ombre look is not only silly in the long-run, but probably not the best for your hair in the short-run.

I absolutely hate when ridiculous trends like this take center stage. The worst part is that people pay a ton of money to look like this, when really, you can do it for free!! Just grow your hair out!

A stupid trend like this isn't bound to last very long.  But for every person I see sporting the look, I will die a little bit inside.

A closing thought? Being fashionable is not about mindlessly following every trend that comes out. It’s being able to differentiate the difference between the good trends and the bad trends.

That is all.

New Makeup Brand Love: Flower Beauty

Walmart has been surprising me a ton lately! Their makeup section is getting better and better.

My latest love?  Drew Barrymore's Flower Beauty line.  I love love love everything the brand has to offer, and because it's only available at Walmart, the prices are super reasonable.

The whole idea behind the line is as follows (via their website):
You no longer have to spend a lot of money to get the quality cosmetics you want and deserve.
How do we do it? We do not pay for advertising. Where other beauty brands spend a vast percentage of the cost of their products on ads, we do not. Drew, as an owner of the brand, takes pride in promoting Flower, which in turn allows us to put all of our resources into the formulas and packaging, and not into advertising.

Pretty cool, right?

So far, I've tried two products--their Creme Blush and their Eyeshadow Quad.  Both products are amazing and feel like decedent, expensive cosmetics--but they're both under $10!

The blush blends super smoothly, as does the eye shadow.  They're pretty foolproof. For the shadow, I went with the "Foxy Browns" quad.  I used every color in the palette and the result was a pretty, brown smoky eye.

I can't wait to try out the other products! The line is definitely Sassy Fashionista Approved!

Keri Russell's Perfect Pout at Sundance

What's not to love about Keri Russell?  She's super gorgeous and always manages to look amazing, without going over-the-top.

Her latest lippy love is one that I've always been a bit obsessed with myself.  Fresh Sugar Lip Treatments SPF 15 are the best lip products when it comes to looking natural, beautiful, and...well, fresh!

Keri went with Sugar Coral, which is a universally-flattering hue.  That said, since the colors are fairly sheer, there really isn't a bad color out there.

What I love about this product is that it's quite perfect for winter.  I don't know about you ladies, but my lips are constantly chapping and downright gross around this time of year.  Simple chapstick just isn't for me--it has no glamour! So that's what I love about the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatments.  They make your lips feel amazing, and manage to make your pucker look pretty at the same time.

What it is formulated to do:
Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15 blends reparative oils and waxes with real sugar, a natural humectant, for delectable and dependable moisture. Sweet and tart black currant oil, rich in plumping essential fatty acids, cushions the lips while antioxidant grapeseed polyphenols and vitamins A, C, and E provide protection from wrinkle-causing free radicals. It also provides essential, year-round protection from damaging UV rays.

Pretty kick-ass, right?!

Do yourself a favor and keep one (or a few) of 'em with you at all times. They're  available at Fresh retailers and Sephora for $22.50.

The Prettiest Dress for V-Day--Under $25!

I've said it over a million times, so I'm sorry if you're already sick of it... Valentine's Day is my absolute favorite holiday.  What's not to love about a day dedicated to love?!

Finding an outfit for the day can be quite a challenge, so I tend to spend lots of time looking around.  I recently came across the most adorable Eyelash Lace dress from Forever21.

The dress is just so classy, while managing to be sexy at the same time.  I'm really loving it.  The color is gorgey--light, blush pink is simple and classic.  It's a color that looks good on everyone.  Even though I do enjoy bright pink, that can be a bit cliche when it comes to V-Day.  The soft hue makes the dress super elegant.

At the same time, the lace adds a bit of sex appeal without appearing slutty, which is always tough do.

Everything aside, the best thing about this particular dress is that it's a Bodycon dress.  That means that it's lined with a material that smooths you out.  Like a built-in slip.  So it's super flattering.

Now just because I'm putting this in the "V-Day dress" category, it's actually wearable year-round and can be dressed up or down.  You can throw on a pair of grey leggings and flats for a more casual look, or go all out with bold accessories and heels. I love clothing that's as versatile as this dress is.

Each dress is $24.80. A pretty incredible deal!

Tips for Your Lips!

Your sexy pout is one of the most important things you've got!  With Valentine's Day rapidly approaching, it's a good idea to give your lips a little extra TLC.  Nothing's worse than smooching with dry, cracked lips. Trust me.

Here are a few tips for maintaining pretty pucker:

  • Before going to bed, clean your lips with a damp cotton puffy. You can use plain water, or makeup remover, depending on what works best for you.
  • Use some oil and massage your lips very gently for five to ten minutes daily. It will improve blood circulation and make your lips look supper pretty and much healthier. This is great to do before you go to bed.  You'll wake up in the morning with super soft lips.
  • When you're going out, put some good quality lipstick on. Not only will your lips look fab, but as a bonus, lipstick offers protection for your lips against the damaging effects of the environment.  A great excuse to buy some of the latest lipstick!
  • Make sure to drink plenty of fluids during the whole day to keep your skin well-hydrated. When your body is properly hydrated your lips will remain moisturized automatically.
  • To get rid of the dead skin cells on your lips take a dry washcloth gently rub it over top of your lips.  Since lips are sensitive, this is a really great alternative to a harsh scrub.  You can also use a soft toothbrush.
  • Always apply a lip balm that has sunscreen in it before putting on your lipstick. This will help your lipstick last longer and your lips will remain well moisturized. Win-win!!
  • Stop licking your lips!!!This habit can make the lips even drier and it will remove all moisture from your lips. A definite no-no.
  • Do not make the mistake of peeling off the skin of chapped and dry lips. I know it can be tempting, and I'm guilty of doing this, but it's crazily bad for your lips.  The skin on your lips is very delicate, so rather than pick at it, apply cream or petroleum jelly to make the skin soft and then with the help of a damp cotton puffy remove the dry skin from your lips gently.

Follow these tips and enjoy having fabulously gorgeous lips that are just waiting for a make-out sesh!
